Cable Gutter Queen (Vinyl LP)
Label: Hydra Head Origin: USA
Red vinyl! Hide the women and children, Connecticut's lunatics are back with their second album. Cable retains their old noisecore sound on this release, but returns with more anger, bitterness, hostility, and experimentation. Like the great Unsane and Today Is The Day, Cable churns out sick metallic noise/metal with frightening vocals and some of the best lyrics you'll read in a while, 'Dying never looked this good.' It's okay to be afraid.

Calamus These Days (Vinyl LP) (Import)
Label: People Like You Origin: Germany
The music on this CD is a mix of bluesy/desert sounding Rock and Doom.
Multiple layers of guitar lead over a real tight rhythm section. Even though
they act as one tight unit, the feel is somewhat loose and laid back at
times... It reminds me at times like Nebula, Clutch, Mudhoney...
The Mudhoney reference applies mainly to the fuzzed out guitars and lead
vocals. The vocals are strong and mainly in the lower register, kind of like
Mr. Arm. The riffs on the othe...

Callisto Providence (Vinyl 2LP) (Import)
Label: Svart Origin: Finland
Limited edition of only 700 copies. Deluxe gatefold sleeve. Includes an MP3 download coupon. Though well within established post-metal boundaries, this album has some major advantages over its many peers. First, it builds its songs around surprisingly catchy melodies instead of the usual huge instrumental climaxes. Second, Callisto has found a genuinely commanding vocal presence in new singer Jani Ala-Hukkala. The tunes on Providence tend towards the cinematic, and be...

Camaros Romantique (Vinyl LP) (Import)
Label: Black Balloon Origin: Norway
Camaros have a lot in common with a band like Five Horse Johnson. The music sounds like a hybrid made up of one piece each of the following compartments: blues, garage rock, 70’s hard rock... and even rockabilly. So call it stoner-garage-blues or whatever you’d like, the fact that this band kinda sounds like a slightly psychedelic garage rock version of Five Horse Johnson should be enough for you to know that you can’t go wrong with adding this CD to your shopping list...

Candlemass Ancient Dreams (Color) (Vinyl 2LP) (Import)
Label: Svart Origin: Finland
Limited edition of only 400 copies on clear vinyl. Deluxe gatefold sleeve. Every once in a while you run into a record you can't help but like, no matter how hard you try not to. Ancient Dreams is the best Candlemass album, and is a landmark doom recording that few bands have ever managed to match. The only reason I decided to write this up in the first place was to reinforce the correct notion that this record is essential. Candlemass is one of the greatest doom ban...

Label: Nuclear Blast Origin: Germany
Limited edition numerated copies. Includes a bonus 7 inch. Deluxe gatefold sleeve. Swedish gods Candlemass present their sophomore full-length in their incarnation fronted by Robert Lowe of Solitude Aeturnus, Death Magic Doom. Considering the vivacious sound the band had on 2007’s King of the Grey Islands, Death Magic Doom has a lot to live up to, but with tales of demons and death, they present eight solid tracks in their trademark classic style.

Includes 3 bonus tracks! Limited edition. Deluxe gatefold sleeve. Doom legend Leif Edling is back with his band Candlemass and the sound is as good as ever. From the 13th Sun sounds like the album that Black Sabbath might of put out after Sabotage if the drugs hadn't of finally taken their toll.

Limited numerated edition. Deluxe gatefold sleeve. Includes 3 bonus tracks (one exclusive only to the vinyl version). Sweden's purveyors of epic doom are back with their latest platter of crushing sonic mayhem, King of Grey Islands. Gone is longtime singer Messiah Marcolin, replaced by Solitude Aeturnus belter Rob Lowe, who turns out to be a very good choice, given that his distinct and different vocal approach brings a new freshness to the band. Candlemass Nightfall (Vinyl LP)
Label: Metal Blade Origin: USA
Pffffftt... how does one go about reviewing one of the biggest classics within the genre by a true classic amongst bands? Although not as influential as 'Epicus Doomicus Metallicus' this is the album seen by a lot of fans as their best. Having found a permanent singer in M. Marcolin, Candlemass set about creating one of the finest albums ever. Perhaps compared to modern-day death/doom it's not that heavy but for its time it definately was skull crushing heavy and it ...

Candlemass Self Titled (Vinyl 2LP) (Import)
Label: Black Lodge Origin: Sweden
The album sounds big and heavy and in-your-face the way it oughta be. The guitars are thick and WAY up front and the drums sound very natural. Thank you, gods of rock! They haven't forsaken their trademark classic doom sound at all. The songs are generally more uptempo compared to their classic material, but the classic Candlemass feel is very present. Old-school purists will find plenty to LOVE on this album, no worries. They've cranked the energy level up a notch.....

Candybar Planet Self Titled (Vinyl 10") (Import)
Label: Drunken Maria Origin: The Netherlands
Multicolored starburst pattern on black vinyl. This 10" is out of print!! These are the last copies available!! This is one of the best surprises I have ever come across. Anyway, I throw the sucker on, and it fuckin' ROCKS. Hard. The most immediate similarity I can come up with is Spirtual Beggars; the singer has a strong voice much like Spice does. Beyond that, the vinyl itself looks awesome, and has a cool transparent sleeve.

Captain Beyond Self Titled (Vinyl LP)
Label: Purple Pyramid Origin: USA
A “supergroup” of sorts, Captain Beyond consisted of ex-members of Deep Purple (vocalist Rod Evans), Iron Butterfly (guitarist Larry “Rhino” Reinhart and bassist Lee Dorman), and Johnny Winter’s band (drummer Bobby Caldwell). This album is definitely one of the most interesting of the era. The musicianship rises to an extraordinary level, led by drummer Bobby Caldwell. I would describe his style as combining jazzlike delicacy and complexity with rocklike power. The al...

Captain Beyond Sufficiently Breathless (Vinyl LP)
Label: Purple Pyramid Origin: USA
Deluxe gatefold sleeve. This album is far tighter and more spacey than the Self Titled. There is little to no structure to these songs. The percussion is fucking killer and seems to almost be the lead instrument a lot of the time. I'd like to be in a band that "covers" this album nightly, just taking it wherever the fuck it goes.

Carlton Melton Country Ways (Vinyl LP)
Label: Mid-to-Late Origin: USA
Limited edition of only 500 copies. San Francisco's CARLTON MELTON is centered around former ZEN GUERILLA's ANDY DUVALL (Guitar/Drums) and RICH MILLMAN (Guitar/Synths). They recorded their psychedelic hypno-drone rock in a genuine geodesic dome, and have created an insane psychedelic squall utilizing alien guitar swells, freaked out tribal rhythms and strange loping pulsations. The heavy vibrations of Can and Pink Floyd suffuse Carlton Melton's work, and they use a bed ...
